Tune in to Meet the Poet with Phil Vernon and Peter A, on 23rd June at 8pm. Neither Phil nor Peter shy away from difficult subject matters. Both poets consider a range of struggles within their work, contemplating ideas of death, grief, loss and suffering, and written with such sensitivity and skill as to remain thought-provoking and moving throughout. Phil Vernon lives with his wife Tebo in Kent in the UK, where he returned in 2004 after spending two decades in different parts of Africa. He works in the international humanitarian and peacebuilding field. His collection Poetry After Auschwitz (Sentinel, 2020) is sparked by the words of Theodor Adorno in 1949 that ‘writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric’. He considers this idea among many other challenging ones, in this thoughtful and contemplative collection. Peter A. is a Scottish poet from Lanarkshire. Peter’s debut pamphlet Art of Insomnia (Hedgehog Poetry Press, 2021) was written during the first nine months after his wife’s unexpected death. The deeply resonating and evocative pamphlet is a demonstration of Peter’s coping methods during this grieving period, as well as a coping method in itself through Peter’s writing of it.
