The Cathedral of Ortigia stands on the main square of Syracuse’s old town. It was originally built in the 5th century BC as a Doric temple dedicated to Athena. Parts of that ancient structure, including several columns, are still visible within the church walls. In the 7th century, the temple was converted into a Christian church. During the Norman period, it was rebuilt and expanded. After the earthquake of 1693, the façade was reconstructed in the Baroque style. Today, the building shows the main historical phases of Syracuse, combining Greek, Byzantine, Norman, and Baroque elements. Inside, the contrast between the ancient columns and later additions clearly illustrates the long and layered history of the site. --------------- Catedrala din Ortigia se află în piața principală a centrului vechi al orașului Siracuza.
