Mary, Mother of God — Beginning the Year With Her “Yes” January 1st — the start of a new year. For most people, it’s a day of resolutions, parties, and fresh beginnings. But for the Catholic Church, it’s much deeper than that. Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God — one of the oldest and most profound feasts in Christianity. It’s a reminder that every new beginning should start not with our plans, but with God’s — and with the same trust that Mary had when she said yes. So what does it mean when we call Mary “Mother of God”? The title comes from the Greek word Theotokos, meaning “God-bearer.” It was officially declared at the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D., one of the earliest ecumenical councils of the Church. At the time, there was debate in the early Church. Some believed Mary was only the mother of Jesus’ human nature — not of God Himself. But the Church affirmed what had been believed since the beginning: Jesus Christ is one Person — fully God and fully man. And because Mary gave birth to that one divine Person, she truly is the Mother of God. Not because she existed before God, or gave Him His divinity — but because she bore, nurtured, and loved the Word made flesh. In her womb, heaven touched earth. That’s why the Church places this feast right at the start of the year — to remind us that God works through humility, through ordinary people who dare to say “yes.” When Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would bear the Savior, she didn’t ask for proof. She simply said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” That moment — her total surrender — changed all of history. As Christians, Mary’s “yes” is our model for faith. It teaches us that holiness isn’t about grand gestures — it’s about trust. About letting God work through us even when we don’t see the whole picture. On this day, the Gospel reading often recalls how Mary “kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” She didn’t understand everything that was happening — but she stayed faithful, silent, and strong. And that’s the kind of faith we need at the start of every year. Faith that listens more than it speaks. Faith that trusts when the path isn’t clear. Faith that says “yes” to God even when it’s hard. The Church also celebrates today as the World Day of Peace, and it’s no coincidence. Mary’s presence — calm, humble, and full of grace — brings peace wherever she goes. In her, we find the model of a heart at peace because it rests completely in God’s will. So as you begin this new year, maybe skip the long list of resolutions. Instead, ask one question: “What is God asking me to say yes to this year?” Because the moment you say yes, like Mary did, everything begins to change. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us — that this year we may live with your faith, your courage, and your peace. Amen. 🙏✨ Please like and subscribe for more.
