St Lucy: The Saint Who Brought Light Into the Darkness In the season of Advent, the Church celebrates St. Lucy (Santa Lucia), whose feast day falls on December 13. Born in 3rd-century Sicily during the Roman persecutions, Lucy secretly vowed her life to Christ. After her mother was miraculously healed through the intercession of St. Agatha, Lucy gave her wealth to the poor and broke off her engagement to a pagan nobleman. Enraged, her suitor betrayed her to authorities. Despite threats of torture and death, Lucy refused to renounce her faith. Tradition says she became miraculously heavy, making it impossible for soldiers to move her. She was ultimately martyred, dying for the "Light" she carried within. Today, devotion to St. Lucy spans the globe. In Scandinavia, she is honored with candlelight processions to symbolize Christ’s light piercing the winter gloom. Her story serves as a modern reminder to overcome "spiritual blindness" by keeping our eyes fixed on Christ. As her name implies, Lucy calls us to be a flame of hope through kindness and forgiveness. Just as she carried candles through the catacombs, our faith can light the tunnels of our own times. This December 13, let us pray for her courage, remembering that no darkness can overcome the light of Christ.
