Here is another VHS rip of the Los Angeles-based dub of the shortened export version of the first Space Battleship Yamato film. This time the aspect ratio doesn't cut off the bottom or top but looks stretched a bit to fit 16:9 since it was an original 4:3 source. Video and audio are a bit better as well. Original upload:    • Pre-Star Blazers Dub: 1977 Space Cruiser Y...   The Space Battleship Yamato film was simultaneously sold for overseas distribution during production, with the film trimmed to 101 minutes (from 145 minutes) to increase profitability. The dub of the film predates the more famous Star Blazers adaptation of the Yamato series. Despite changing many character names (Susumu Kodai became Jason Kodai, Daisuke Shima became Bernard O'Toole, and Shiro Sanada became Stephenson), the script stayed relatively close to the original Japanese. A group of nine actors were assembled to record their parts in October 1976, including veteran character actor Marvin Miller, who was best known as the voice of Robby the Robot in Forbidden Planet. Space Cruiser Yamato was screened at the Cannes film festival in May of 1977 (3 months before its Japanese release) accompanied by an English promotional flyer and deals were made with several different distributors in the United States, Mexico, Canada, England, and France. The film, however, received a lukewarm reception from the critics during its short theatrical run, with many believing it to be simply a rip-off of Star Wars, despite predating it by 3 years. The films dub would only be released on VHS in the United Kingdom twice, once in 1980 and again in 1986. The series was condensed into a 130-minute-long movie by combining elements from a few key episodes of the first season. Additional animation was created for the movie (such as the scenes on Iscandar) or recycled from the series' test footage (such as the opening sequence). The movie, which was released in Japan on August 6, 1977, was edited down further and dubbed into English in 1978; entitled Space Cruiser Yamato or simply Space Cruiser, it was only given a limited theatrical release in Europe and Latin America, where it was called Patrulha Estelar (Star Patrol, in Brazilian Portuguese) or Astronave Intrepido (Starship Intrepid, in Spanish), though it was later released on video in most countries. For many years, English-language releases of the anime bore the title Space Cruiser Yamato. This romanization has appeared in Japanese publications because Nishizaki, a sailing enthusiast who owned a cruiser yacht, ordered that this translation be used out of love for his boat. However, in reference to naval nomenclature, it is technically inaccurate, as senkan (戦艦) means "battleship" and not "cruiser" (which in Japanese would be jun'yōkan (巡洋艦)). Leiji Matsumoto's manga adaptation was usually referred to as Cosmoship Yamato. Star Blazers (1979) is a heavily edited dubbed version for the United States market produced by Westchester Film Corporation. Voyager Entertainment released DVD volumes and comic adaptations of the anime years later. Contemporary Yamato releases, including the Voyager Entertainment DVD and Seven Seas Entertainment release of the manga, are marketed either as Star Blazers or Space Battleship Yamato.
