In this session, Melanie Martinelli tackles one of the biggest problems in workplace learning: people leave training with good intentions, but too little of it gets applied back on the job. Drawing on transfer research and practical experience, Melanie explores the transfer problem, shares why so much value is lost after training, and introduces the 12 levers of transfer effectiveness as a usable framework for L&D professionals. Rather than treating transfer as luck, she shows how to identify the factors that matter most, focus on what is within your control, and make smarter design decisions that increase the chances of real world application. Recorded live on 19 February 2026, this session was delivered as part of IDTX Online 2026. What you will take away includes: A practical understanding of the transfer problem and why training alone is often not enough An introduction to the 12 levers of transfer effectiveness and how to use them as design and planning prompts How to think about factors such as learner motivation (volition), peer support, supervisor support, and design choices Why transfer planning matters, including simple ways to help people leave training with clear next steps A practical example of using implementation intention statements ("When X happens, I will do Y") to improve follow through A simple prioritisation exercise to reduce overload and help learners focus on what they will actually implement This is a practical, evidence informed session for L&D professionals, instructional designers, trainers, and facilitators who want to improve learning transfer without adding lots of complexity or cost.
