I rode my bike up the gravel 4 Mile Road (CR 400) in Pagosa Springs, Colorado in January 2026, when there was just a light layer of snow on the ground. This is a 3x speed ride that starts out rolling past open pastures and gradually climbs toward snow-covered mountain peaks in the San Juan Mountains. I rode all the way to the USFS winter closure gate—the point where 4 Mile Road is gated in winter—and turned around there. The gate coordinates are 37.35728449933428, -107.03837753535747. This is about a 7 mile ride one way. If you like scenic, quiet winter rides and big mountain views without the deep-snow conditions, this route is a good one.
