#ComputerSystemOrganization #SecondaryMemory #StorageDevices Secondary storage devices are used to store a large amount of data permanently, which is not possible by using Primary/Main Memory. To specify the storage capacity of the secondary storage devices, memory units used are : Byte, KB, MB, GB, TB and so on. Magnetic Media Floppy Disk Hard Disk Magnetic Tape Optical Media CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW Blu-Ray Disk Flash memory Pen Drive Memory Card A floppy disk is a disk storage medium composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic enclosure lined with fabric that removes dust particles. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive (FDD). Floppy disks, came in three sizes, 8 inch (203 mm), 5.25 inch (133 mm) and 3.5 inch (90 mm) sizes, with max 1.44 MB high-density storage version. A Hard disk is a non-volatile, high capacity storage device ranging from 1GB to several Terabytes. It stores information on one or more circular platters (disks) which are continuously spinning. These Rotating disks are coated with a magnetic material and stacked with space between them, sealed inside a case. Information is recorded on the surface of rotating disks by magnetic heads as tiny magnetic spots. Data is stored on the platters in tracks, sectors and cylinders to keep it organized and easier to find. In Magnetic Tapes, magnetic coating are stored as data on a long narrow strip of plastic film. It is used to store archival purposes. DVD (Digital Versatile/Video Disk) is an optical storage device. It can store about 15 times more information than a CD-ROM. It can transfer data to a computer about 20 times as much as faster as a CD-ROM. Its capacity may range from 4.7 GB to 8.5 GB. A Blu-Ray Disc (BD) is a high-capacity optical disk medium developed for recording, rewriting and playing back high definition (HD) video. Blu-Ray Disc support high resolution and more advanced Audio-Video formats as compared to DVDs. A Flash-memory is a small, ultra-portable storage device with a solid state memory. (It has no moving parts unlike magnetic storage devices nor it use LASERs unlike Optical Storage Devices). It Works similar to RAM but its non-volatile. Fairly Inexpensive and storage range from 256 MB to 128 GB and beyond, Memory cards are used to store data mainly in Digital cameras, Computers, Mobile Phones, Music Players, Video game console etc. They offer high record ability with power-free storage, (range few MB to TB).
