Killer, 15, gets 12-year minimum term for knife murder

A 15-year-old boy was locked up for at least 12 years for stabbing another teenager to death. Leighton Amies shouted "I've wetted your boy" after fatally attacking Tomasz Oleszak, 14, with a steak knife. Amies claimed he had inflicted the injuries accidentally after he was set upon by a gang at a nature reserve in Gateshead in October 2022. But he was convicted of Tomasz's murder and of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to another teen after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court. He had already admitted possessing a bladed article. The judge, Mr Justice Martin Spencer, told Amies he had "relished" having a knife on the night of the attack. "You took the knife to the scene, intending to have it available to use as a weapon, which you then did," he said. He imposed a sentence of detention at His Majesty's Pleasure with a minimum term of 12 years. Amies was also handed a sentence of 30 months' imprisonment for the attempted GBH and 12 months for knife possession, with both ordered to run concurrently with the 12-year minimum term.
