Learn from Infrastructure Victoria CEO Dr Jonathan Spear and Principal Planner Dr Kath Phelan as they discuss the independent advisory body’s latest research “Our home choices: how more housing options can make better use of Victoria’s existing infrastructure”. The report looks at how existing demand for housing in new greenfield suburbs can be shifted to established suburbs, closer to existing infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and public transport. One in five Victorian households said they would trade a detached home in a new suburb for a townhouse or apartment for the same price closer to city centres. But a lack of suitable housing for moderate income households, especially families and first home buyers, is pushing people further away from jobs, schools and public transport and putting more pressure on the city’s urban fringe. The research offers 10 policy interventions to shift housing demand. Dr Jonathan Spear, Chief Executive Officer Previously the organisation’s Deputy Chief Executive, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, Jonathan has led Infrastructure Victoria’s work on Victoria’s 30-year infrastructure strategy, research program and provision of independent advice to the Victorian Government. Dr Kath Phelan, Principal Planner Kath Phelan is currently principal planner at Infrastructure Victoria where she focuses on improving the integration of land use and infrastructure. She was previously a researcher in the Clean Air and Urban Landscapes (CAUL) Research Hub within RMIT University's Centre for Urban Research.
