Heat pumps are naturally efficient and low carbon, extracting heat from renewable environmental sources. They rely on electricity to provide this function, typically producing 3 units of heat for each unit of electricity used. For heat pumps to be cost-competitive with other sources of heat, they need lower running costs to encourage uptake. Yet in many places, electricity is over-taxed and burdened with levies, whereas competing fuels such as gas are not. This means that despite their efficiency, heat pumps can have higher running costs than gas or oil heating. This webinar, featuring Dr Richard Lowes, Global Lead, Heat and Buildings, at the Regulatory Assistance Project, explores this issue, providing case studies of how governments have reduced relative electricity prices and delivered reasonable heat pump running costs. Richard will propose policy options for governments looking to boost heat pump uptake.
