Camp Tanjung Harapan is one of the key entry points and orangutan feeding stations within Tanjung Puting National Park, located along the Sekonyer River in Central Kalimantan. As the first major stop for most visitors coming from Kumai by boat, the Tanjung Harapan wharf serves as a welcoming gateway into the park’s rich tropical ecosystem. The wharf itself is a simple wooden jetty that extends into the river, where traditional klotok boats gently dock in succession. Because space is limited, boats often arrive in a cascading manner—lining up one after another and tying their sides together. Passengers from boats farther out must cross through other boats to reach the jetty, a common and friendly practice in the region that adds to the charm of river travel. The boarding and disembarking process is managed carefully by boat crews to ensure safety and ease, especially for older travellers or during rainy conditions when decks may be slippery. Once on land, visitors walk along a forest trail leading to the orangutan feeding platform, which is set deeper in the jungle to maintain a natural environment. The path, typically flat and shaded, is rich with sights and sounds of the rainforest, including birds, insects, and the occasional primate. At the feeding station, park rangers place bananas and other fruits on a wooden platform to supplement the orangutans' diet during fruit-scarce seasons. This provides visitors a chance to witness semi-wild orangutans emerge from the trees, often carrying babies or playfully interacting. The feeding times are generally scheduled in the afternoon, and it's a moment of quiet anticipation as visitors wait for the orangutans to appear. The viewing area is respectfully distanced to minimize human interference, reinforcing the park’s conservation ethics. Camp Tanjung Harapan also serves as a base for forest patrols and research, and its proximity to local Dayak villages gives it a cultural significance as well. The camp offers not just a glimpse into orangutan conservation but also a meaningful experience of Borneo’s natural and cultural heritage. With its blend of river adventure, wildlife observation, and serene jungle atmosphere, the visit to Tanjung Harapan becomes a memorable highlight of the Tanjung Puting journey.
