Not very often, but from time to time I take out the works of a few very well-known painters and develop my own version based on them. This time my choice fell on Cézanne. I wanted to study still life, especially since I myself have grown fond of this theme that I once neglected—and even hated. For a long time I didn’t create still lifes at all, because art school made me detest them, but if I remember correctly, I already talked about this in an earlier video. Then everything changed at a Sandi Hester workshop, because Sandi showed how still life painting can be enjoyable, and that there’s no need to be afraid of it. Since then I’ve been experimenting and returning to the subject again and again. I like painting the objects around me—from different angles, with different colors, but usually the same objects. This time, however, I didn’t have the energy to come up with my own composition, but I didn’t want to skip painting that day either. In the end, my eye caught on Cézanne, and I chose one of his works as a starting point. I’m sure I’ll try this again, because I was able to observe many things, and since a recording was made, I can see where I got stuck and what I skimmed over as time slowly ran out. One thing is certain: studying other painters and recreating their works is not a waste of time. Through this process, we may also experience something of them. I can really place myself into it—especially when I don’t have to paint in front of a camera. I recreated one of Frida Kahlo’s paintings this way, and it was tormenting—not because of technical difficulties, but because while painting I felt every single nail had to paint in Frida’s body. In Cézanne’s case, those fresh, green, crunchy apples wouldn’t leave me alone, and I could feel the sour taste in my mouth, that refreshing acidity. This isn’t conscious while painting; the realization comes afterward—but it does come. And then the painting is no longer just a copy, but an experience, a shared hour with the master himself, with Cézanne. #painting #artprocess #stilllife #cezanne #artistlife #artstudy #acrylicpainting #sketchbook #learningfrommasters #sketchbookart
