Here is a crude mock up of this a/c shade device that has recently released on kickstarter, basically it's snake oil and the manufacture and those promoting it and getting paid through affiliate links don't even have a basic understanding on how hvac systems work. I'm by no means a content creator so i'm sorry for the not so edited video and have no skin in the game to make any profit, just want to spread awareness on this bs product. I'd like to test the actual product, but I don't want to support a company that promotes this kind of product and my plywood mockup is essentially the same thing. The hvac system does not care how shaded it is, it only cares about the temperature of the air being pulled across the coils, so it would be virtually impossible to create a scenario where shading the condenser is beneficial. spraying it with water works because it is removing heat from the coils by other means, but is not a good idea because it will damage the coils over time. VIDEO BREAKDOWN: Testing was done on a 5 ton 13 seer unit on a 2100 square foot home. Outside temperature during this test is 95 degrees, a/c was running for 1 hour prior to beginning test and remained on during the entire testing procedure. It only took me 2 minutes to setup the shade mock up for testing so other variables would not have an effect on the test. Return temperature was 77 degrees for entirety of testing. Measured outlet vent temperature 3" inside of closest vent from the return vent (infrared thermometers are not good for testing this as the results are inconsistent). RESULTS: Unshaded in direct sunlight: 62.1 degrees vent temp Shaded with no direct sunlight after 20 minutes: 62.1 degrees vent temp I also took wattage readings but not shown in the video 5755 watts shaded or unshaded, no change. That's right zero benefit on power to run the unit or create cooler vent temps. AC condenser shading is BS. I might try this test again once outside temperatures reach 105-110 degrees, we are unusually cooler for this time of year, so stay tuned if you want to see that video
