Marine ecologist Kura Paul-Burke from Waikato University, her husband Joe Burke, a marine advisor, along with iwi Ngāti Paoa and its chair Herearoha Skipper, are part of Pou Rāhui, a project where five Hauraki Gulf iwi are restoring kaimoana. 11 hectares of kina barrens have been cleared around Waiheke Island after their numbers have soared due to the decline in lobsters and snapper. Undersized pāua were sent to Arapawa Sea Farm where they grew and bred thousands of baby pāua which are now being reseeded in four secret sites around Waiheke. Involving rangatahi in the scheme has ensured ongoing care will continue in the taiao.
