Grocery shopping in Saudi Arabia. On this episode, we went to one of the most popular supermarket in Jeddah-- Hyper Panda. We were curious about a number of things: Are grocery prices cheap in Saudi Arabia? Is Saudi Arabia expensive? What are some unique things found in Saudi supermarket? What is the cost of living in Saudi Arabia? Is it cheap to travel Saudi Arabia? For these answers and more: Check out our full supermarket tour in Saudi Arabia! The key one for us is the cost of living. People always ask us: is [insert country] affordable? But, it depends on the wages people earn. We can see the prices of the items in the stores, but even if we google what minimum wage is, we aren't sure how many people are earning minimum wage-- and which items are considered staples, whereas which ones are luxurys. Now, in a general sense, countries that have very low prices are typically still developing, whereas countries that have expensive prices are fully developed. This is why Saudi Arabia stands out to us. We've been hanging around Jeddah for 3 or 4 days now, and we can see this is not a poor country. The roads are all 3 lanes wide, the cars are all brand new, there isn't much garbage, pollution, etc. The people seem to be living well. And yet: 1 USD LOAF OF BREAD! Whaaaat! 4 USD for 30 EGGS!??!?! And the wildest one of all: 30 CENTS FOR A 6 PACK OF PITA????????? In Canada, 30 cents is a uselss amount of money. Maybe you could buy one piece of gum. Maybe. And so we consider Saudi Arabia as one of the most affordable countries we've been to-- if you buy local items. It seems there is a big divide between local items and imported ones. Ivana almost fell off her chair when she saw a 10 pack of IndoMie for nearly 20 bucks. That stuff should be a buck a pack, max!! It's unclear to us how much of this affordability is from all the oil money. We've learned that around 75% of the governments revenue comes from oil, and there is no income tax. Having the government collect such large amounts of money, without having to take it from the citizens, is like a cheat code!! It's interesting to imagine what Saudi Arabia would look like without the oil money.... actually I have no idea where to even start with that one. In the end, we've been impressed with how things look in Saudi Arabia. More to come!! TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Saudi Arabia grows fruits and veggies?
