Today’s pie review is from the Artizan Bakery in East Street, Rockhampton, a gluten-free bakery. My sister and niece have severe gluten intolerance, and my son and I have minor intolerance, and I promised to give it a try for them. The pie lifted easily from the container. The base was a little soft, likely from steaming in the foil container, while the top and edges had a good crunch. The filling consisted of thick, tasty mince with a consistent cheese flavour throughout. Although the cheese was not visually obvious, it was clearly present in the taste. Bacon appeared occasionally, not in large amounts but when you hit a bit, you knew it. There were a few small pieces of steak at the end. Really, either sell it as a mince pie or make it a proper steak pie. In terms of it being a gluten-free pie, you couldn't tell. It was comparable in taste and structure to regular pastry. Overall, the pie had good flavour, a pleasant texture on the top and sides, but a softer base and the limited amount of bacon content means that I am going to give it a 3 out of 5. Also, be willing to dig deep into your pockets for one of these. Until next time, happy munching.
