EP 32 Quarry House to Doddington - The Grand Tour of Northumberland

21st May 2023 Join me on my walk of historic Northumberland as I continue my hike. Packed full of history and beautiful scenery. UK hiking at its best in England's least populated county. Starting from where I left off in 2021, I first visit the radio and TV masts that form a prominent landmark in this area of Northumberland. I then move onto visit a neolithic to early bronze age burial ground, possibly from the beaker period over 4,000 years old. From here, I visit a four-post stone circle that is missing from the OS map and dating from the same time as the burial ground. Taking a detour to visit Roughting Linn (often confused with a different waterfall called Routin Linn), I hit lucky with the time of year producing a wonderful showing of bluebells. From here, I continue my descent off Sandyford moor to the lovely village of Chatton, where I take in their wonderful church. I leave the village following paths across stunning farmland to visit Fowberry Tower and bridge; reminiscing on a forgotten WWII POW camp, before heading via East and West Horton to Doddington Moor. I visit an unexpect WWII pillbox on route before visiting another neolithic stone circle. I visit the Ringses, the first of three hillforts on the moor and take in the spectacular views before descending into Doddington. To be continued...
