Family Tormented By School Cell Phone Policy

by Mikaya Thurmond One family says a school cell phone policy is punishing them more than their child. Their daughter was caught with the phone in school and got it taken away. But now, they're begging for an exception to the rule because of an emergency health crisis. Elizabeth Allen is a student at Copper Basin High School. She says was sitting thwere doing my homework and my dad's cell phone rang in my pocket and the teacher heard it and took it up and I went to talk to my principal and he was like nope you can't get it back.School policy is to confiscate cell phones for 6-weeks. Elizabeth's parents were upset, but were willing to deal with the punishment. She was being an absent-minded teenager, says Elizabeth's mother, Ginger Allen. But Sunday, her father was rushed to the hospital after having a seizure. With no other way to contact the hospital - they begged the school to return their only form of communication. All I wanted was to know for emergency purposes... if I could please please have it back. Once I got down here I hand no way to contact my family, children... nothing, says Ginger.We spoke with the director of schools by phone. He wouldn't budge. He says rules are rules. I just can't go through and pick and try to decide which one is important enough for me to go against a policy that was made. If they can take it up it's gone for 6 weeks, adds Dr. Jones.Although the phone policy is used as a rough and tough penalty for the students, this mom still says she's the one being punished.
