Juan Carlos and Bhumipol walking together surrounded by military STORYLINE: Spanish King Juan Carlos arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday for a state visit that Spanish officials hope will boost cultural, economic and military ties with Thailand. Juan Carlos last visited Thailand in 1987, and the royal families have maintained a cordial relationship for over four decades. The first Thai language version of Spain's literary classic, "Don Quixote", will be presented on Wednesday with Juan Carlos in attendance. It will be the 85th foreign language edition of the work, which celebrated its 400th anniversary last year. The heads of Spain's top 30 companies are part of the royal entourage, and they hope to boost business co-operation during the three day visit. A Thai-Spanish trade and investment forum is scheduled for Thursday. Spanish companies will be invited to explore the possibilities surrounding infrastructure projects worth 42 (m) million US dollars, which were recently announced by the government of Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The Spanish business delegation will also meet with Thaksin on Thursday. Military ties between the two nations have been strong, according to the Spanish ambassador to Thailand, who said the two countries' navies have particularly strong ties. Many senior Thai naval officers, including most admirals, have trained in Spain and can speak Spanish fluently. Several Thai battleships, including the Chakri Narubet, were built by Spanish firms. During his visit, Juan Carlos is expected to attend a review at the Royal Thai Navy's headquarters on Wednesday. The first Thai King to visit Spain was Chulalongkorn, the fifth of the Chakri dynasty, in 1897, while in 1962 Thai King Bhumipol Adelyadej took his queen to Spain.
