The Suffragettes were fighting for women rights back in the early 20th cent. And to defend themselfs against police brutality the learned Jiu Jitsu. This Jiujitsu was brought to England by Barton Wright. On his Bartitsu academy taught two Japanese sensei Uyenishi and Yukio Tani. Those do not only share their knowledge to Alfred Hutton but also taught women like Phoebe Roberts. In 1908, the new famous Edith Garrud took over women's classes at the Golden Square School when Uyenishi left Great Britain. The Suffragette were also conected to the Bartitsu club in an other way: Marguerite Vigny (a.k.a. “Miss Sanderson”), the wife of Pierre Vigny who taught cane fighting on the academy taught defense with the umbrella or parasol to the Suffragette. I had the pleasure to took part in a Suffra jitsu class held by Lauren Ireland from @YorkSchoolofDefence at the Tremonia Fechtschule, and I am very lucky to share it with you! There is not much about it on YT so share it! If you are interested and this is in your reach, visit https://yorkschoolofdefence.co.uk/
