   • [4K] A jungle expedition to the Tumuk Huma...   • Barend van Dijk • In May 2023, I embarked on a jungle expedition with the Wayana Tribe deep into their territory. Our goal was to climb the Tumuk Humak Mountains. The expedition was led by the Wayana Tribe's Paramount Chief, Ipomadi Pelenapin, and organized by the Mulokot Foundation. Our journey commenced with a flight from Paramaribo to Kawemhakan, a Wayana village. From there, we navigated upstream along the Litani River. Along the way, we established three base camps. Reaching the mountain posed its own set of challenges. It was the rainy season, which caused all riverbanks to flood deep into the jungle. To reach the mountain's base, we had to trek for nearly two hours through waist-deep water and swim through multiple creeks. After hours of hiking and climbing, we reached the top of the mountain, affording us a panoramic view of the Amazon basin on one side and the Guiana Shield on the other. Basically we were walking on the Suriname-Brazil border, with elevations exceeding 700 meters. It was a crazy experience and view. We had provisions with us for only three days. After that, we relied on the rainforest. While some scenes might appear disturbing, they are characteristic of everyday life of the indigenous people in the rainforest. Enjoy watching!
