From Medan, it’s about a 3.5-hour drive to the peaceful riverside village of Bukit Lawang — the gateway to the Gunung Leuser National Park, home to some of the last wild orangutans on Earth. During the hike, we spotted so many different monkeys: 🐒 Pig-tailed macaques 🌿 Long-tailed macaques 🌿 The amazing Thomas Leaf Monkey, only found in Sumatra And the absolute highlight — we watched wild orangutans feeding high up in the trees, in their natural habitat. It was surreal! We had a delicious fruit feast on banana leaves right in the middle of the jungle — simple but amazing. Then we trekked further to a quiet riverbank, where we enjoyed a local nasi goreng lunch and relaxed by the water. But the adventure wasn’t over — we hopped onto a man-made raft made from tyres, and floated down the river with the current all the way back to our lodge. So much fun — you really have to see it to believe it! This day was wild, magical, and filled with nature. I hope it inspires you to explore this beautiful part of Indonesia.
