With the new book “Glitch Theory: Art and Semiotics,” Michael Betancourt succeeds in opening the semiotic door to glitch art and leading it into that productive paradox that sees the disruption as both a mistake and an expression. For the audience, this creates the basis for interpretive expectations, which results from the overlay of signal (meaning) and noise (irrelevance) as an ambivalent interpretation system. With this theoretical new foundation, the capacity for meaning embedded in the glitch finally comes onto the stage of consideration - and with it terms such as "digital transcendence", "pseudo-diagnostic recognition", "ontological exhaustion", "authenticity" - in the "embrace of Mistakes” as digital metaphors of existence and reflexive glitch ethics. The artistically complex digital manipulations, misalignments, distortions, misregistrations and mechanical failures demand expertise and interpretive patience from the audience. As artistic compressions in elaborate production models, glitch art wants (and must) be discovered in a complex way by the audience. Betancourt points out how different disruption metaphors appear in synesthetic artifacts and how momentarily they can appear. Ultimately, he paves the way for an aesthetic criticism of technesthesia. Assuming that art would disappear from the earth and would have to be decoded from the luckily surviving glitch art, Michael Betancourt's glitch semiosis would be the theoretical manual with which this reconstruction could succeed. Betancourt once again presents a new standard work, exciting to read for anyone who wants to seriously engage with the theory development within glitch art.
