The maritime sector is a key part of Mozambique’s economy. With over 2,400 kilometres of coastline and more than 60 per cent of the population living in coastal areas, shipping and maritime work play an important role in livelihoods and trade. In May 2021, Mozambique ratified the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC), committing to improve working and living conditions for seafarers. The Convention entered into force in May 2022. Following ratification, Trade for Decent Work in Mozambique supported national partners to in their work to implement the MLC. The ratification and effective implementation of the MLC contributes to sustainable and inclusive economic development in Mozambique, by ensuring that the expansion of the shipping sector to support trade guarantees decent working and living conditions for seafarers. Trade for Decent Work in Mozambique focused supporting the implementation of the MLC post ratification.
