Solid-fuel ramjets are incredibly powerful and simple engines, perfect for long-range, high-speed flight. But they have a huge problem: they are notoriously difficult to control, making them unreliable. You can't just throttle them like a normal engine, and if you push them too hard, they can suddenly fail. In this paper, researchers tackled this problem not with better hardware, but with smarter software. They created a detailed computer simulation of a solid-fuel ramjet to understand its complex behavior. Then, they designed a learning-based AI controller that could pilot the engine, constantly adapting to changing conditions to provide stable and reliable thrust. Join us on Summarized Science as we explore how this adaptive AI was tested in a virtual missile interception. The results are a fascinating glimpse into the future of smart propulsion systems, potentially enabling the next generation of hypersonic vehicles and long-range missiles. Cited paper: G. T.
