"The sea gave birth to a great giant" refers to historical volcanic eruptions at sea that propelled ash high into the atmosphere, leading to global cooling. In the 14th century, notably during the "years without summer," the eruption of the Tambora volcano released massive amounts of volcanic ash, blocking sunlight from reaching the Earth's surface. The consequence was stunted growth, famines, and floods. The colder climate following the plague outbreak in the 14th century exacerbated the plagues' impact on the population. Simultaneously, intense battles akin to today's struggles between mafia families were waged by noble families, further affecting the population. As was customary, the Church attributed these calamities to the sins of the people, who were believed to have incurred God's wrath.
