The pedal features four controls (Speed, Depth, Feedback and Delay Time) as well as a central toggle switch, allowing the user to choose between 3 modes of operation (Flanger, Toneprint and Tape). The ‘Flanger’ mode allows you to find those classic swirling jet sounds, while more vintage and psychedelic tones are achievable with the ‘Tape’ mode. The Vortex therefore presents enough tweakability for serious gear-heads, yet doesn’t alienate those who prefer simplicity, thanks to it’s straightforward and unintimidating layout. However, for those who do indeed wish to dig deeper, the Vortex is part of TC Electronic’s accomplished Toneprint pedal range. This means that via their free software (the ‘Toneprint Editor’), you can further manipulate parameters within the pedal, expanding its capabilities and offering an incredible amount of tonal options. There is also the Toneprint mobile app (available for iOS or Android devices), allowing users to download and beam patches created by renowned players into the pedal, opening up a whole world of new and inspiring possibilities. So, whether you are looking to enhance a musical idea with some colour, or send your riffs into the stratosphere with airplane-like sounds, TC Electronic’s affordable Vortex Flanger is a shining example of a modern and innovative pedal; pushing the boundaries whilst retaining some classic charm.
