The Stories of Southern Illinois, episode 5 - The Little Farm Over the Hill Episode five in this series has been inspired by a December 1925 article titled "Over the Hill" which appeared in a four-part series in the Marion Daily Republican newspaper. Exposing some hard truths of the age, the article shared in vivid detail, the life and residents of the Williamson County Poor Farm. Featured in the paper at the height of the Christmas season was no mistake. In the 1920's society was re-evaluating everything, and how we cared for the weakest among us was but one of the things on that list. The four-part feature in the Marion Daily Republican was part of the growing concerns of the age. Now, 100 years after the article on the little farm and the residents who called it home you would think the story would be about the progress made, but for me,... it will always be about the 80+ years the farm served as the last resort for so many.
