Samarate (Varese) developed in the Middle Ages along the banks of a small stream. Chronicles tell us of the presence of two churches, the larger of which was dedicated to Christ the Saviour. The church, restored during the Renaissance period, was ransacked by French troops in 1636, who stole all the precious vestments and furnishings of the Italian church. Following the serious events, the church was enlarged to twice the size of the previous one. The building survived until the middle of the 18th century, when it became clear that it was impossible to restore it again. The parish priest and the vestry opted to build a new church, erected in spite of the worshippers' financial straits; the onset of serious financial problems had led to the auction of all assets in 1771. The masons resumed firing bricks in two kilns, completing the masonry part at the end of 1777. Once the work was finished, they moved on to the embellishment of the interior, starting with the new Baroque high altar, crowned by a large number of works of art. In 1883, the parish priest was able to bless the foundation stone of the work, which was erected in three years to its current height of 46 metres. In 1887 it was inaugurated with the installation of the five ancient bells of the Rho Sanctuary, donated to the parish. The battered medieval bell tower had collapsed during the complex demolition operations, burying the masons, who miraculously escaped unharmed. On 5 May 1933, the previous bells were lowered from the tower and sent to the Barigozzi foundry in Milan, which reused the bronze to cast the current 8245 kg concert, two thousand more than the previous one. The last major operation was the replacement of the battered pipe organ, replaced in 1956 by the new mechanical instrument. The last stop was Epiphany: when two friends rang the eight bells, amidst Christmas melodies and a solemn concert to close this important solemnity! What a magnificent concert, how good these bellringers were. #church #bells #cinematic #landscape #carol #christmas #bell #italy #newyear #catholicchurch #vlogs #travel
