The small midwest town of Miami, Oklahoma (pronounced my-am-uhh) on historic route 66 contains one of the Mother Road's most glamorous gems: the Coleman Theatre. This majestic building was completed in less than a year and opened by George Coleman, a local mining magnate, for his young bride and his workers in 1929. Having barely survived the Great Depression and the fall of Vaudeville, it fell into disrepair by an uncaring movie company. 70 years later, the local residents - fearing its eminent demise - rose together to save the Coleman and return it to its most magnificent state. The theatre today rivals any theatre in any city, large or small, standing proudly and firmly. In case you were wondering, it is a very active and popular venue! The Coleman Theatre just isn't a theatre - it is also home to an original Wurlitzer pipe organ. Except it isn't merely an organ: it is a air-driven orchestra, complete with real pit instruments - such as drums and trumpets - activated by the organist through the keyboard console! The Coleman has its ORIGINAL 1929 Wurlitzer. Located less than 30 minutes from Joplin, Missouri, the sleepy town of Miami, Oklahoma feels remote and unsophisticated - a homey, American town untouched by urban development. The residents like this environment, and it suits their peaceful, unhurried lifestyle. But that doesn't stop them from enjoying or being exceedingly proud of their opulent theatre in the middle of America.
