In May 2019, the Swiss Airforce’s Airfield at Emmen near Lucerne celebrated 80 years as a base for military aviation. Yes, it was in 1939 that the first military plane, a Bücker – Bü-131 Jüngmann, became the first Swiss Airforce aircraft to land in the valley of the famous ‘Swiss cheese’. I was one of 40,000 aviation enthusiasts who flocked there to take advantage of this unique opportunity to see so many combat planes in one place, some of them rarely on view at all. Extremely popular were several well-known Swiss flying teams: Patrouille Suisse, the Swiss Airforce’s formation flying team, were there. Flying an F/A- 18Hornet Solo Display were the PC21 team. Another group doing a demonstration was the PC7 team. Lastly there was the Super Puma helicopter display team. Right at the end of the film, look out for two Patrouille Suisse pilots waving to the crowd after they land. They are Major Gunnar Jansen and Captain Michael Duft. Captain Duft will be taking over leadership of the team from Major Jansen in 2020.
