Generally speaking, a woman can expect to have vaginal bleeding for 3-6 weeks after delivering her baby, and this is whether she has a C-section or not. It’s the uterus that is healing and that’s going to bleed, no matter how the baby was delivered. So take a normal period that lasts 4-7 days and stretch it out over 3-6 weeks and that’s basically the pattern that you’re going to see. The first couple days of a period are typically heavier, it’s bright red bleeding, the cramps are more significant, and so that’s kind of like the first week or two after having a baby, but that first few days after a woman will see the most bleeding that she should ever see during her postpartum experience and it should taper off an amount. And then after about a week or two it may turn from being red to brownish, which is evidence of old blood. And then it may turn into just pinkish discharge and then back to normal white discharge and this is typically where a woman should be when she has her first postpartum visit with her doctor at 6 weeks after having a vaginal delivery. Women who have a C-section may not see the doctor until 8 weeks postpartum and by then, of course, she should also have stopped bleeding as well. If you still have vaginal bleeding or spotting past this point, talk with your doctor and let them know about it. And based on their knowledge of your circumstances they’ll be able to determine if further investigation or intervention is necessary for that. The biggest risk for postpartum bleeding exists during the first couple of hours after delivery but it does extend to a couple of months after delivery. Some women can have postpartum issues further down the road due to various issues, and so again a doctor should know about it and they can decide if anything needs to be addressed. You wanted to know specifically if moving around a lot and taking care of three kids can cause you to have more bleeding or spotting, and an increase in activity can actually prevent a woman’s uterus from healing, and for this reason women are advised to not exercise until they’ve been checked out by their doctor and given the green light because everything has healed. And so, let’s say that your bleeding seems to be following a good pattern. It’s tapering off an amount and maybe on week 4 you got this itch to go to the grocery store and clean your house and do the laundry and go for a walk and at the end of the day you’ve started spotting. This would be a reason to just kind of rest and see if it goes away. If it does, then that’s great. You can move on. But if you continue to spot or it picks up and you’re having more vaginal bleeding then you should let your doctor know about that. So too much activity can actually prevent your body from healing, so if you can, take it easy for a few days and see if that changes and then, of course, if it persists or gets worse, then let your doctor know about it.
