In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Aigle to Leysin, Switzerland, in 4K/60 frames per second. Join us in the driver’s cab for a breathtaking ascent from Aigle (Vaud, Switzerland) up to Leysin-Grand Hôtel via the historic Aigle–Leysin railway, a metre-gauge rack-and-adhesion line operated by Transports Publics du Chablais (TPC). The line is just over 6.2 km long and climbs about 1,047 metres from its base in Aigle up to Leysin-Grand Hôtel. The steepest parts use the Abt rack system, with a maximum gradient of 23 % (230 ‰). Electrified at 1,500 V DC, the line has seen various voltage upgrades over its history to handle increasing demands and speed. Departing Aigle, the train first travels through streets in town, passing the Aigle-Dépôt where a direction reversal occurs for uphill operation. Then the journey quickly gains altitude, passing through vineyards before entering wooded slopes and tunnels. As elevation increases, the landscapes open to alpine meadows, culminating in the double-track section between Leysin-Village and Leysin-Feydey, and finally the steep rack section up to the Leysin-Grand Hôtel summit terminal. This cab ride offers spectacular views: from the Rhône Valley panorama near Aigle to forested gorges and high-mountain vistas near Leysin. Because of the steep rack sections, hearing the cog-wheel engage and seeing the dramatic shift in scenery makes this a memorable engineering and visual experience. Recent upgrades are underway: in 2025, TPC placed an order for new Stadler Beh 4/8 rack-&-adhesion multiple units that will be specially built for AL (Aigle-Leysin) and other TPC mountain lines. These vehicles are designed for steep gradients like the 230 ‰ here, tight curves, and improved passenger comfort.
