This week on the Horti-Culturalists we were very fortunate to re-visit historic Alton house, a 19th century Hill Station on Mt Macedon, to take a look a look at the 1920's heritage registered greenhouse and the Victorian productive garden. The mists rolled in as we explored the sensational and enormous greenhouse but we were still able to stumble outside and find the overgrown gooseberries, a wall of figs and even a vineyard in the somewhat shabby chic productive garden! Stephen explains just how a productive garden like this was maintained and run in its glory days with a dedicated year round staff making sure everything was in bloom and ripe for the summer season when houses like this came into their own.
