Located in Srirangapatna (near Mysore), the Gumbaz-e-Shahi is a magnificent Persian-style mausoleum. While often associated primarily with Tipu Sultan, its history actually begins with his father, Hyder Ali. 🏛️ Origins and Construction (1782–1784) The Gumbaz was commissioned and built by Tipu Sultan between 1782 and 1784. Purpose: It was originally intended as a final resting place for his father, Hyder Ali, who died in 1782. Royal Burial: Later, Tipu’s mother, Fakr-un-Nisa, was also buried there. Tipu's Death: After Tipu Sultan fell during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799), the British allowed him to be buried alongside his parents with full military honors. 🎨 Architectural Highlights The structure is a prime example of Indo-Islamic/Persian architecture, heavily influenced by the style of the Bijapur Sultanate. The Dome: A massive, imposing dome sits atop a cubical structure, visible from a great distance. Black Granite Pillars: The veranda is supported by 36 polished black granite pillars. These pillars are remarkably smooth and have retained their luster for over two centuries. Ebony & Ivory: The original doors were made of ebony and intricately inlaid with ivory. These were later replaced by doors gifted by Lord Dalhousie in the mid-19th century. Tiger Stripes: The interior walls of the tomb are painted with tiger stripes (the Bubri motif), which was Tipu Sultan’s personal emblem and symbol of authority. 🌳 The Surroundings The Gumbaz is set within a large, beautiful garden known as Lalbagh. Masjid-e-Aqsa: Adjacent to the mausoleum is a small but elegant mosque built by Tipu. Family Graves: While the three main royal graves are inside the chamber, the outer veranda and the surrounding garden contain the graves of many of Tipu's relatives and military commanders. The Cypress Trees: The garden was once famous for its exotic cypress trees and plants collected from across Asia and Europe. Legend says that during the British siege in 1792, soldiers cut down many of these trees to use as tent poles and firewood. 📍 Quick Facts for Visitors Location: Ganjam, Srirangapatna (about 15 km from Mysore). Timings: Generally open from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Entry: Usually free, though a small fee may be required for footwear storage.
