In the aftermath of the extensive cleanup operation at Lincoln and Rose in Venice, there is a visible reduction in homeless encampments. The area now presents a cleaner and more organized environment. Reports indicate a substantial number of individuals experiencing homelessness in the area may have been placed in homes, marking a positive step towards the city's commitment to addressing homelessness with sustainable solutions. On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Venice witnessed a collaborative cleanup operation as the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. came together to address homeless encampments. In a move aimed at benefiting both the local community and individuals experiencing homelessness, a segment of the sidewalk of Lincoln Boulevard and Rose Avenue in Venice was designated for a detailed cleanup. Workers donned protective hazardous materials suits for safety, following strict safety protocols throughout the process. The operation was characterized by the synchronized efforts of two waste management teams. The Department of Public Works team, identifiable in yellow vests, and the Clean Harbors team, in orange vests, each took on roles that played to their strengths. The Clean Harbors team focused on sorting and safely disposing of hazardous waste, including batteries and syringes, while the Department of Public Works handled non-hazardous waste collection, ensuring the thorough cleaning of the area. Los Angeles Police officers ensured safety and order during the operation, highlighting the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and compliance with safety protocols. Despite the enforcement of Ordinance 56.11, which restricts specific activities in public spaces, no citations for public camping violations were issued. While this operation in Venice contributes to Los Angeles' wider strategy to combat homelessness, it represents only a part of the city's overall approach. Acknowledging the limitations of cleanup efforts alone, Los Angeles remains committed to developing sustainable solutions that address the underlying causes of homelessness and offer necessary support, reflecting a commitment to long-term change. ‐---------------------------------------------------------- Fabian Lewkowicz is a Santa Monica-based photojournalist and press photographer, and the creator of the photo blog, Santa Monica Close Up.
