Osage is an amazing wood, with a neon yellow color, and is extremely rot resistant. This is my de-barking hatchet for the sawmill. Needs a new handle and decided to try Osage. There are osage fence posts in the ground today that have been there for over 100 years, and still strong. I milled this some years back in West Virginia. I've never used it as a tool handle, but this will see a lot of weather over the years, so the rot resistance will come in handy. A note on the hatchet. I use this to take the bark off of logs before milling. Typically, I only de-bark if the log is dirty. You don't want the blade sharp, because then it will dig into the wood of the log. If you keep it blunt and strike at an angle, it will skip off of the wood after penetrating the soft bark, thereby splitting the bark from the log quite easily and efficiently.
