After a couple of days off, the University of Hawaii football team returned to the practice field Tuesday morning, with Week 2 of spring camp continuing to put a heavy workload on the Rainbow Warriors’ quarterbacks. Starting quarterback Micah Alejado, a sophomore and the reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Year, is being held out of spring practices as he recovers from an ankle injury. While Alejado remains active from a leadership standpoint, his absence has opened the door for increased repetitions for the other quarterbacks on the roster. True freshman Maika Eugenio, a Hawaii-born product of Bishop Gorman, and redshirt freshman Bjorn Jurgensen, a transfer from Virginia, split most of the work in wet and windy conditions Tuesday as they look to take advantage of the opportunity. “I’m super grateful,” Jurgensen said. “That was one of the main reasons I came here. They told me Micah had an ankle injury and that he was going to be rested in the spring, and that I’d be able to get a lot of reps. For developing as a quarterback, that’s huge. Getting that experience and being able to run with the ones and go against our first-team defense has been big for me.” Eugenio said the added snaps have helped him grow more comfortable in the offense and build chemistry with his teammates. “Me and Bjorn have been getting a lot of reps, taking in a lot of information,” Eugenio said. “I’m getting at least 20-plus plays a day, so just getting used to the plays and everything else. It’s only going to help us get better. I feel more comfortable with the offense and I’ve been connecting more with the guys.” Eugenio also said the transition has felt familiar, though the speed of the college game has been an adjustment. “It feels good,” he said. “I love what Coach Arceneaux and Coach Timmy are doing with the plays and how Coach Kapanui is teaching us every day. It feels a lot similar to Gorman, just with a few changes here and there, and definitely the speed is one big thing I’m getting used to.” Hawaii News, Hawaii Weather, Hawaii Sports See more of the team that is Working for Hawaii on our website: https://www.khon2.com Stay informed about Hawaii news, weather, sports and entertainment, subscribe to the KHON2 YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/KHONNews...
