It was identified in Threeways school Bath that there was an increasing number of children with unhealthy lifestyles and diet. Programmes in the local authority were not suitable for the particular client group at school due to their special educational, physical and emotional needs. Mainstream services had been accessed by some families previously but were not appropriate and not beneficial. This gap in service provision was identified and discussions between the school Bath Rugby Foundation local authority and the CCG began and we developed an appropriate programme. Bath Rugby Foundation through the 'Scrum Down for Health' programme have supported the club and begin every week with 40 minutes of fun activities. This is to increase physical activity levels enabling the children to try new sports and raise fitness levels - from tennis to tag rugby, bike sessions to circuit training. The following 45 minutes parents / carers and sibling's attend to engage in interactive activities such as learning about sugar and salt content in food, portion sizes and healthy snack swaps. There are also food preparation sessions encouraging families to try new foods - morroccan cous cous, feta salad and fruit smoothies. Another session involves going into Sainsbury's located next to school to look at food labeling. I approached the store to ask for support for the programme and was offered their training room facilities to hold the session in as well as providing drinks and food samples. They also kindly offered food vouchers to help purchase ingredients for the cookery sessions. The key through this programme is collaborative working - combining skills from different agencies with the aim of effecting change in young people and their families. For a number of young children in the club it is their only form of activity and engagement out of the normal school day. It has helped build their confidence to try new activities as well as improve their self-esteem and well-being. Parents are finding this also reflected in their happiness levels at home. Another important factor although not the primary aim is that of weight management. Already 3 out of 7 have lost weight and by the end of the programme I hope this number will increase. The CCG - sirona have also supported the programme using funding to provide activity tracker watches for the children. As children are so technology focused now these watches help them monitor how much activity they are undertaking daily and sets targets to achieve and encourage more activity. We are hoping to continue this exciting new programme next academic year and offer it to more pupils and their families in the school if funding allows.
