The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) recently hosted a Global Network Webinar to share data and insights from The Sustainable Development Report 2024. (https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2024/) Yongyi Min, Heather Page, Daniel Eshetie, and Sokunpanha You provided an overview of the key findings from the report, which paints a sobering picture of the world's progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite some pockets of success, the report finds that only 17% of SDG targets are currently on track, with nearly half showing minimal or moderate progress and over one-third having stalled or regressed. The speakers highlighted the multitude of interconnected challenges the world is facing, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, escalating conflicts, and the growing climate crisis. These crises have pushed an additional 23 million people into extreme poverty and 100 million more into hunger compared to 2019. While the data landscape has improved, with the number of indicators in the global SDG database increasing from 115 in 2016 to 229 in 2024, significant data gaps remain, particularly in areas like gender equality, climate action, and peace and justice. Participants discussed the importance of investing in national statistical systems and leveraging innovative data sources and methodologies to fill these gaps and support evidence-based policymaking. The event also introduced the new progress assessment framework incorporated into the 2024 report, which uses a traffic light system to evaluate the likelihood of achieving each SDG target by 2030 based on current trends. This provides a clear and accessible visualization of the global community's performance. Overall, the webinar underscored the urgent need for transformative action and international cooperation to put the world back on track to achieve the 2030 Agenda. Participants were encouraged to explore the wealth of data and resources available, including the extended SDG report, the global SDG indicator database, and the innovative data exploration tools UN Data Commons developed in partnership with Google. The Global Network of Data Officers and Statisticians aims to improve coordination and collaboration among peers and organizations, to connect existing but not necessarily well-connected networks and initiatives, and to provide and share information on capacity building efforts globally. In the framework of the Global Network UNSD organizes a series of webinars. For more information visit our information pages at https://unstats.un.org/capacity-devel...
