So, what does it take... Rusty fuel tanks are not easy repairs. There are a lot of pit falls and traps that can damage the tank and put a big dent in your pocketbook. With hundreds of products on the market, how do you choose which ones that will last and which ones that will fail..? When it comes to restoring classic motorcycles, you can’t always buy a new tank, or a used one for that matter, or it’s too expensive and or the paint color doesn’t match or something, so you left with a repair that you’re going to have to do yourself. To have a shop to complete a repair, well that’s out of the question… you might as well buy another used motorcycle. I have personally used Caswell Gas EPOXY tank sealer, and Red Kote and they both left me with bigger messes then when I started with. When I went to research the next product that would work, I approached POR 15 tank sealer, but I felt the reviews were not very strong and I didn’t want to deal with another failed tank sealer. In fact, you can’t even go by the reviews anymore because most of them are curated and the bad ones are sifted out. I came across KBS tank sealer years ago and have used it ever since. After I read that it could hold a tank of acetone after 168 + hours with no noticeable damage to the product, I knew this product was for me. In fact, the sealer is so tough it seems that only hydrochloric acid or battery acid can remove it. Just a note. I am not sponsored by KBS, and they don’t even know who I am. I’m just a guy that absolutely hates doing a job twice. Now KBS is the only tank sealer that I know that guarantees over 10 years of service, but they also claim that they have ran tests from 15 to 20 years, without sealer failure. Pretty bold claims if you ask me, but I don’t know any other manufacturer that claims that kind of durability. Most videos on Youtube, when they’re working on a rusty motorcycle gas tank. It’s always some easy, small peanut tank that is difficult to work on. Sportsbike tanks have blind spots everywhere, where your typical bolts and washers will get stuck in the sides of the tank. I use a linked chain with some broken links or small carabiner to break up the rust. If you have any experiences, put it down in the comments.
