Composed and performed by Kyle Scully. D R O P L E T S (2025) - 00:00 Chapter I: RAINDROPS - 00:56 Chapter II: DOWNPOUR - 03:26 Chapter III: TEARDROPS - 05:11 Chapter IV: BLOSSOM - 07:41 Chapter V: REMEMBRANCE - 10:48 Scored for 4 timpani and a backing track, Droplets aims at searching ways to showcase the instrument in the most expressive way imaginable. In the early stages, I began brainstorming creative ways to fit the idiom of equal melodic and percussive material. I then realized that the vibrations of a drumhead, upon being struck, reacted similar to the ripple effect of a droplet hitting water. Nature unfolds, raindrops and thunderstorms emerge as the themes of sadness, loneliness, and bittersweetness coexist with teardrops. Although the piece is mainly a weather narrative, the underlying metaphor speaks to the tragedy of losing a loved one and coming to terms of acceptance. Droplets opens with descending half-step motifs that serve as the foundation, often reappearing at different segments. Much like a storybook, the piece is divided into five chapters. Chapter I, RAINDROPS, takes the opening motifs and expands on it, stating passages of memories one shares. Chapter II, DOWNPOUR, introduces the first threatening presence of a thunderstorm, representing the inevitable tragedy that lies ahead. Chapter III, TEARDROPS, breaks from the thunderstorm and transitions into fierce winds, evoking the emotions of loss, anger, and confusion. Chapter IV, BLOSSOM, depicts the weather clearing and evolving into a warm sunshine, symbolizing comfort and reassurance. Chapter V, REMEMBRANCE, ends with a bittersweet sunset shifting into twilight followed with sounds of lingering raindrops, all honoring and reflecting together what once was.
