Tulsa, Oklahoma's JJ Cale had a great ability to write songs that defied the listener to sit still. Many of his guitar-driven tunes are undeniably gonna force you to at least do some toe-tappin'. From his Grammy-winning 2006 collaboration album with Eric Clapton titled Road To Escondido, here is JJ and Eric doing Cale's "Ride The River." Among the musicians on that song and album was Walt Richmond, the keyboard player in The Tractors, a great band from Tulsa led by Steve Ripley. Also from Tulsa, and great friends of Cale on the album, are David Teegarden Sr. and Jimmy Karstein, and Cale’s old bass player Gary Gilmore. Cale owed much of his wealth to Clapton's covers of his songs "After Midnight" and "Cocaine," as well as several others. Some of the big royalty checks that he received were also due to Lynyrd Skynyrd's cover of "Call Me The Breeze." Clapton's 2007 two-disc collection of hits titled Complete Clapton included "Ride The River," "After Midnight" and "Cocaine," and helped keep Cale's mailbox busy.
