Candace Figg Professor, Educational Studies Faculty of Education Digital technology tools really do support some ways of learning better than others. The best types of learning environments where they work well are inquiry-based, where there is usually a research project, they’re seeking out information about different things, they’re learning through simulations. The digital technologies really work well with language literacy, solving of math problems, project based, where their creativity comes into play. So, these are the things that we find often in the classrooms. That little bit of risk taking around tools and bringing it into the classroom and saying, ‘OK, here’s a set of robots. This is how we think we’re going to code it; let’s see what happens.’ There are digital tools that a student needs to be able to use for learning purposes. They come to the classroom, and they have a lot of technical skills, but for learning purposes the research has shown that they have to be taught how to learn with tools. For those purposes, we recommend each student, by the time they get to high school, should have a toolbox, a kit of digital tools that they use for learning purposes. Those are things like productivity tools, all of the google tools, Office 365, things that help them work with documents, Adobe, all of these different tools that allow you to read pdfs and create pdfs; flowcharting, so that they can set up their ideas and spreadsheets, so that they can collect data. They also need some creativity tools. The creative tools are things that allow them to create slideshows and videos and podcasts, and drawing tools, all different types of tools that are for productivity for learning. We do learning and teaching best through stories, and digital technologies are fabulous for stories. Digital technologies do a beautiful job of supporting the art of storytelling.
