IF YOU WANT A BETTER RECALL, TEACH THIS ! When Practicing recall with our dogs, we always go with Dogs Name - come here - reward ! (Direct recall) But we don’t often teach what is called an indirect recall. A Direct Recall is simply that, you call your dog and it’s expected to come directly to you. Indirect Recall is where the dog doesn’t have to come all the way back to you, just follow you in the direction you’re going. It’s the indirect recall that actually strengthens your recall. It teaches the dog to pay more attention to you, you become unpredictable and the dog will often stay closer to you as a result. Practicing both of these helps build that reliable recall with a lot of dogs. At the end of this video, there is a perfect example of when to use what recall and how it’s so important to teach both.
