Pierre Du Mage's 'Plein Jeu' (or Pierre Dumage; from Suite du Premier Ton) is a captivating work that showcases the grandeur and dark colors of the French Baroque organ. As an eminent French composer and organist, Du Mage (1674-1751) was heavily influenced by the French organ school, which is evident in the intricate counterpoint and rich harmonic language of this piece full of suspensions. The 'Plein Jeu' is the opening movement of Du Mage's only surviving work, the 'Premier Livre d'Orgue,' published in 1708, containing only one suite of organ pieces in the first mode. This recording was made by Nenad Leonart (organ, video and audio), beginning of April 2023 in the city of Wasselonne. The Silbermann Organ in Wasselonne is a historical musical instrument built by the renowned organ builder Johann Andreas Silbermann (1712-1783), who was a prominent figure in the Alsatian organ building tradition. Located in the Saint-Laurent Church in Wasselonne, a town in the Bas-Rhin department of northeastern France, this organ is a testament to Silbermann's craftsmanship and mastery. * * Pierre du Mage (also Dumage) (baptized 23 November 1674 – 2 October 1751) was a French Baroque organist and composer. His first music teacher was most likely his father, organist of Beauvais Cathedral. At some point during his youth Dumage moved to Paris and studied under Louis Marchand. He also befriended Nicolas Lebègue, who in 1703 procured for Dumage a position of organist of the Saint-Quentin collegiate church. In 1710 he was appointed titular organist of the Laon Cathedral. Due to strained relations with his superiors in the cathedral chapter, du Mage left on 30 March 1719, at the age of 45, and became a civil servant. He apparently neither played nor composed music professionally until his death. Du Mage's only surviving work is Premier livre d'orgue, published in 1708. This collection is dedicated to the chapter of Saint Quentin. It contains a single Suite du premier ton: eight pieces in the traditional French forms: Plein jeu, Fugue, Trio, Tierce en taille, Basse de Trompette, Récit, Duo and Grand jeu. In the brief preface du Mage explains that these are his first works, and that he modelled them after the music of his former teacher Marchand. His music is, however, of very high quality, and entirely representative of French organ music of the period. Musicologists Félix Raugel and Willi Apel both singled out Dumage's Récit for its "delicate and gentle lyricism", and Apel also praised the Tierce en taille and the Grand jeu as particularly striking. A second livre d'orgue was presented in 1712 to the chapter of Laon Cathedral, but has never been found. ABOUT THE ORGAN: Constructed in 1745, the Silbermann Organ in Wasselonne features a beautiful Baroque-style wooden case adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. The organ has two manuals (keyboards) and a pedalboard, offering a wide range of tonal possibilities. The instrument is equipped with 30 stops (originally it had 27), which allow the organist to create various colors and timbres, reflecting much of the classic French baroque organ sound. Johann Andreas Silbermann, a member of the renowned Silbermann family of organ builders, was born in Strasbourg. He is known for constructing high-quality organs throughout the Alsace region and neighboring areas, contributing to the unique Alsatian organ tradition. The Wasselonne organ is one of the few remaining examples of Silbermann's work, representing the rich musical heritage of the region. The Silbermann Organ in Wasselonne has been the subject of restoration and preservation efforts over the years, ensuring that this significant instrument remains in playable condition. It is cherished by organists, musicologists, and historians for its sonic beauty, historical importance, and as a valuable example of Silbermann's expert craftsmanship.
