The "Fugue Grave pour Orgue" by Jean-Henri d'Anglebert (1629-1691) is a captivating work that highlights a certian aspect of the art of French Baroque organ music, played by Nenad Leonart on a Silbermann historic organ. As a celebrated harpsichordist, composer, and organist, d'Anglebert made significant contributions to the development of keyboard music in France. The "Fugue Grave pour Orgue" is a prime example of his skillful writing for the organ, combining the elaborate contrapuntal style with a solemn atmosphere that captures the essence of the era while also being extremely rich in very precise ornaments. The recording was made on the Gros Jeu de Tierce with Tremblant Doux on the 1745 J.-A. Silbermann organ in Wasselonne in April 2023. Nenad Leonart (organist) was also responsible for the video and audio production. Though lesser-known compared to his contemporaries, d'Anglebert's contributions to the keyboard literature should not be overlooked. The "Fugue Grave pour Orgue" offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of French Baroque organ music, demonstrating the composer's technical prowess and his ability to create deeply expressive works. This piece remains an essential work for organists and music enthusiasts who wish to explore the rich and diverse heritage of French Baroque keyboard music. Jean-Henri d'Anglebert (1629-1691) was a distinguished French composer, harpsichordist, and organist. As one of the leading keyboard composers of his era, d'Anglebert's music remains influential today. Born in Bar-le-Duc, d'Anglebert's early life and musical education are largely unknown. He may have been a student or friend of Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, as evidenced by a tombeau he composed in Chambonnières' honor. By the mid-1650s, d'Anglebert was associated with prominent French harpsichordists, such as Louis Couperin. In 1659, he married Magdelaine Champagne, sister-in-law of organist François Roberday. D'Anglebert began his career in Paris as an organist at the Jacobins church. In 1660, he became harpsichordist to Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, and later succeeded Chambonnières as the royal harpsichordist. He served in this role until his son Jean-Baptiste-Henry took over in 1674. D'Anglebert also served Dauphine Duchess Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria until her death in 1690. His principal work, Pièces de clavecin (1689), is a collection of four harpsichord suites. The collection's beautiful engraving and sophisticated table of ornaments were groundbreaking and inspired composers like J.S. Bach and Rameau. The majority of his other compositions are found in two manuscripts, including unique harpsichord arrangements of lute pieces and experimental notation for keyboard music. D'Anglebert's surviving organ works consist of five fugues and a quatuor, a rare four-voice contrapuntal organ piece. ********************* If you enjoyed this content, make sure to subscribe to my channel and don't miss out on the next recordings!
