John 14:12–14 is often quoted to say that Christians will be able to perform greater works or miracles than Jesus. Or that whatever Christians name, they can claim in Jesus' name. However, the context of this verse is given the night before Jesus' crucifixion. Jesus has told his disciples he is about to leave them, and they are discouraged. They are wondering how they will continue to navigate through life without Jesus by their side. So, Jesus tells them that he will be the way to heaven if they don’t know the way. The disciples though need more assurance from Jesus. Jesus responds by saying that he uniquely reveals the Father. It is not simply that God sent Jesus as a representative, but that Jesus and the Father are perfectly united. Everything Jesus does is the Father working in him (John 5:17). Everything that he speaks is the Father speaking through him (John 12:49). Jesus is saying, “if you can’t trust my words, then at least trust in me because of my works,” referring to his miracles. Then, Jesus gives his promise that his disciples will do greater works than him. But Jesus is not referring to miracles but to the purpose of miracles. Jesus' signs pointed forward to Jesus' death and resurrection, while his disciples will be able to point back to the completed work of the cross. Christians can do a greater work than Jesus because they can tell people that salvation is no longer promised but accomplished.
