In this series, I will examine popular Bible verses that are often misinterpreted and misapplied. Matthew 7:1 is often referenced as a way to prevent people from judging others. However, a closer examination of the context of this verse reveals a different meaning. Jesus did not prohibit his followers from ever judging other people. He is prohibiting them from hypocritical judgment. This would be consistent with the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 13:9; 17:7) which required that any person who would execute a punishment on a person must also not be guilty of that same sin. So, Jesus is not saying that Christians should never judge others. But he is saying that we are to judge without hypocrisy and to address our sins before addressing other people's sin.
